"The air in the subterranean corridor smelled of ion discharge and cold copper. Every few seconds, light pulsed down the conduit overhead — a low, rhythmic amber wash that beat like a slow heart. You stand at the edge of the threshold. Below you stretches the network: an endless web of glowing pipes where billions of units of raw value flow every second. Out there in the dark, thousands of 'tunnel riders' strap in every day, throwing themselves blindly down every glowing tube that promises a quick drift. Most of them crash."

"'They crash because they read the promises printed on the banner, not the code written on the floor,' a voice says behind you. You turn. Standing in the center of the vault platform is Zoran. 'I don't guess,' Zoran says. 'In the dark, guessing is just a slow way to lose everything. The ledger does not negotiate.'"
